Small premium, visible benefit
Vision is typically the cheapest line on a benefits statement. It is also unusually easy for an employee to evaluate, because the value shows up as a specific number: an annual exam covered in full, an allowance toward frames, a discount on lenses or contacts.
That makes vision a useful benefit for employers who want to broaden the package without a meaningful budget increase.
What a group vision plan usually includes
- An annual eye exam, generally with a small copay or none
- A frame allowance on a set schedule, commonly every 12 or 24 months
- Lens coverage, with options for progressives and anti-glare coatings
- A contact lens allowance offered in place of frames
- Discounts on elective procedures such as LASIK through the carrier network
Bundling vision with dental
Most carriers price dental and vision better when they are written together, and administering one carrier instead of two is meaningfully less work at enrollment and renewal. If you are adding group dental, it is usually worth pricing vision at the same time even if you are undecided.
Employer paid or voluntary
Because the premiums are low, some employers simply cover vision outright as an inexpensive upgrade to the package. Others offer it voluntarily so employees can opt in at group rates. We will quote both so you can see what the employer-paid version actually costs before you rule it out.
