Term life insurance in Washington
Protection for the years
that matter most.
Cover a financial need with a clear time horizon. Term life can help protect income, mortgage payments and family plans during the years those obligations are largest.
The basics
A benefit for a defined period
Coverage
Choose an amount
The policy pays a death benefit for a covered death while the coverage is in force. Beneficiaries can use the proceeds for household needs.
Duration
Choose a term
Common level-premium periods include 10, 15, 20 and 30 years. Available periods depend on the insurer, product and applicant.
Cost
Understand the guarantee
For level-premium term, the premium is fixed for the specified period. Coverage after that period may end or renew at a higher cost, depending on the contract.
Match the obligation
Plan the amount and the timeline
| Need | Amount to consider | Timeline to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Income support | Amount to considerThe household spending you want replaced, adjusted for other resources. | Timeline to considerHow long dependents may rely on that support. |
| Mortgage & debt | Amount to considerBalances you want the benefit to help address. | Timeline to considerThe remaining repayment period. |
| Children & caregiving | Amount to considerChildcare, education goals and the cost of replacing unpaid care. | Timeline to considerThe years those responsibilities are likely to continue. |
Look past the first premium
Four details to compare
Price
Use comparable assumptions
Compare the same amount, term and payment frequency. A preliminary health class can change after underwriting.
Renewal
Ask what happens later
Find out whether you can renew, the renewal premiums and any age limit. The original level rate usually does not continue indefinitely.
Conversion
Read the deadline
Some policies permit conversion to specified permanent products without new evidence of insurability. Eligibility, deadlines and pricing rules vary.
Application
Understand underwriting
A no-exam route may still involve health questions and data review. Answer accurately and review any exclusions or riders.
Common questions
Before choosing term life
Does term life build cash value?
Most term policies do not. Their primary purpose is a death benefit during the covered period.
What happens when the level-premium period ends?
Check the contract. Some policies end; others permit continued coverage at renewal rates that can be substantially higher. Review your options before the deadline.
Can I combine term and permanent coverage?
Yes, if the mix fits your needs and budget. A household may have temporary income-replacement needs and a smaller lifelong obligation. Compare permanent coverage.
Is coverage active as soon as I get a quote?
No. A quote alone does not establish coverage. Confirm the insurer’s approval, effective date, required payment and any delivery conditions.

Tell us who depends on you, what you want covered and a premium you can maintain.
Quotes are estimates, not a guarantee of coverage. Eligibility, premiums, benefits and exclusions depend on the insurer and policy. Review the issued contract and any underwriting requirements. Information reviewed September 19, 2026.
