Is your benefits support keeping pace with your business?
A growing workforce can need a different service arrangement. Use a practical review to decide what to improve with your current broker or what to look for in another.
Quick answer
Compare your current needs with the agreed services, responsibilities, and renewal calendar. A gap is a useful discussion point, not proof that another broker has failed.
Look for a change in needs
| Business change | Useful question |
|---|---|
| More employees or related businesses | Who coordinates the ACA employer-size and reporting review? |
| New locations or remote staff | Have the exact networks been checked where employees live? |
| More administrative work | Who enters employee changes, confirms carrier updates, and coordinates notices? |
| More employee questions | Are group, individual, virtual, and new-hire education available? |
| A difficult renewal | What information and comparisons will be available before the decision date? |
Put the service arrangement in writing
Clarify employer responsibilities, broker support, vendor duties, fees, and escalation contacts. At WIB, Employee Navigator is available and customized at no extra cost for group clients who want it. Company administrators are trained to enter new hires and terminations, while WIB handles carrier changes. COBRA notices are sent and tracked by third-party administrators; their fees may apply.
Ask for a comparison you can use
Compare premiums, employee costs, networks, plan terms, and implementation effort. Alternative funding deserves a contract review where available, not a presumption that it will save money. Claims advocacy can help navigate a question; it does not guarantee a claim will be paid.
A checklist for choosing a benefits broker
Whether you are hiring a broker for the first time or replacing one, ask each candidate to show you, not just tell you:
- A current Washington insurance license you can verify with the Office of the Insurance Commissioner
- Quotes from several carriers, not just one, with the differences explained in plain language
- How they are paid, in writing
- A renewal calendar that starts early enough to compare options before your deadline
- Who handles enrollment, employee questions and claim problems during the year
- Help with compliance basics such as ACA reporting, COBRA notices and required plan documents
- One or two client references with a business like yours
Choose the next step
You may decide to clarify the current relationship, obtain a second opinion, or change brokers. A broker change and a plan change are separate decisions; carrier acceptance and service transitions still need coordination.
